A new way to play an old classic.
Created by a man known as Salami Dawg in 2025, it is a rotating evergreen format designed to promote creative play in an otherwise stale environment. In a world that's mostly dominated by EDH and oft-neglected competitive constructed formats, people want to play constructed formats that aren't solved, with the 99% of the meta are 5 or less decks. Players want to create and innovate. We don't want to wait six months for a problematic card to go out of print before it can be banned. It's fun to theorycraft and explore interesting card interactions outside of a singleton format. That's such a cool interaction, we want to run four copies of each. Most importantly, many of us have been playing Magic since our childhood, and for some of us, that was quite a while ago. Sometimes you just want to play like it's 1999 again. To recap: we wanted a constructed format that is fresh, creative, innovative, flexible, dynamic, random, and not quite like anything currently played. This is our Chess 960.
